NTU Priorities Fund

An Appeal to Support Students Facing Hardship Due to COVID-19

In April 2020, NTU launched the NTU COVID-19 Relief Package to help students facing financial hardship due to the global pandemic. Comprising new coordinated measures to assist disadvantaged students, the Relief Package included the setting up of a new fund: the NTU Priorities Fund.

The NTU Priorities Fund

Established and seeded with a personal gift of S$100,000 from NTU President, Professor Subra Suresh and his wife, Mary Suresh, the NTU Priorities Fund provides immediate financial assistance to NTU’s neediest students who have no other recourse for help during this challenging period.

An initiative supported exclusively by private philanthropy, the NTU Priorities Fund has attracted a long list of donors including many NTU faculty and staff, alumni, friends, and members of the Board of Trustees as well as organisations such as the Lee Foundation, GIC Private Ltd, and the Ngee Ann Kongsi.

Thanks to the generosity and community spirit of these donors and many others, the Fund has grown exponentially to S$1.7 Million within 6 months. To date, more than 1,000 NTU students have received financial support from the Relief Package and more than 400 of them are beneficiaries of the disbursed NTU Priorities Fund. The typical assistance package offered to the students ranged between S$500 and S$3,000, depending on individual needs.

In response to the Fund’s impact, NTU Deputy President and Provost Professor Ling San said: “It has been very inspiring to see the NTU faculty, staff, students, alumni and the wider community come together to support our needy students during this time of great uncertainty. Alleviating their financial burden allows them to focus on their studies without worrying about their living expenses.”

As the Fund is being nurtured as an “evergreen fund”, recipients of support from the Fund are encouraged to "pay it forward” after graduation, thus perpetuating the cycle of giving and creating a culture of philanthropy that can benefit future generations of students.

Beyond the pandemic, the Fund will be used to bridge digital inequality, a problem highlighted and exacerbated by the intensified use of digital technology for remote learning arrangements and communication during the outbreak.
